The Feralpi Group is one of Europe's leading steel manufacturers and specialises in the production of steels for the construction industry. It is among the 500 Europeans corporations that are reducing faster their carbon footprint.
Indeed, the Feralpi Group continues to invest in innovative technology and is committed to climate change contrast.
With this purpose in mind, the company contracted NCO a a technological partner to reduce heat loss and stabilize the production process in the Lonato plant in Italy.
NCO has therefore designed a series of thermal-insulated covers on the 6 lines of the billet roller conveyor downstream of the continuous caster, and in August 2023, during a plant’s production stop, the installation was carried out.
These new thermal-insulated covers allow for reduction of heat loss and, consequently, decrease the energy required by the afterward processes.
The new system includes a new roller conveyor fitted with modular insulated covers, where the billets spend more time, leading to a relevant temperature loss decrease.
The system was designed to minimize installation and maintenance time, and to allow maximum flexibility during emergency interventions.
All existing components have been re-engineered to ensure the highest durability despite the higher thermal stress.
The reduced energy requirement for the following rolling operations implies a reduction in greenhouse gasses emissions, and significantly reduces the overall operational costs.
The ongoing collaboration between the Feralpi Group and NCO, since the design to the erection phases, led to excellent results that even exceeded the best expectations.
